YouTube backlash

YouTube has a new feature. It's a display of related videos in Mac style doc. The bad part is it's showing even when the video is playing (do I need to see that stupid dock when watching my video?) and when your mouse cursor get close to the video (not even touching it yet). Then it takes a few seconds to disappear, and the worst is you can't disable it.

Enjoy the users backlash and spamming at YouTube blog.

Singapore, Indonesia to sign extradition treaty, defence pact on Friday

SINGAPORE : After a few years of negotiations, Singapore and Indonesia have completed discussions on two bilateral issues - an Extradition Treaty and a Defence Cooperation Agreement.

The foreign and defence ministers from both countries will be signing the agreements in Bali on Friday.

For now, what is confirmed is that Singapore and Indonesia will sign both the Extradition Treaty and a Defence Cooperation Agreement in a ceremony on the island of Bali on Friday.

More details of the agreements reached were not disclosed.

Then the sand ban will be lifted very soon? If it is, then Singapore is hit quite hard with the ban and Indonesia is using the ban (disguised under environmental concerns) to push Singapore into signing. Building the integrated resort with expensive sand or let the rich corruptors go. Looks like the corruptors are of less value compared to what the casino can give.

And for Indonesia, since when environment is number 1 priority compared to money? If sand mining is too destructive for one place, they can still get it from other places. Why stop the export when there is demand? The is surely to pressure Singapore. But I don't think Indonesia will get anyone captured in Singapore. Those guys will just go to other country, but probably not as convenient as Singapore, which is close to home and well developed.

The anti smoking campaign that makes non smokers want to quit... watching it

The 30-second commercial, which first aired on all the four main language channels last week, is a graphic depiction of a woman afflicted with oral cancer. The camera zooms in on a tight shot of her face with a diseased tongue, decaying teeth and chapped lips riddled with sores.
According to the HPB, since last Tuesday’s launch of the three-month-long Smoking Control Campaign, its toll-free smoking QuitLine (1800-4382000) has seen a five-fold increase in the number of calls.

Housewife Leong Sow Chan was one of the peeved parents. Her nine-year-old daughter was so traumatised by the commercial the first time she saw it that she had a nightmare that night.

While she still does not think the commercial is in appropriate taste, she admitted that it "definitely turns me and my non-smoking family off. We are so disgusted we either switch channels when the ad comes on, or look away".

This is one advertisement that makes me want to call the number. It's just so gross. Yucks..
It's just too bad I'm not smoking. I couldn't find any picture of it from the net. Maybe I'll snap the picture from TV later.

Update: Here is the picture.

Singapore close to F1 deal

Singapore close to F1 deal
Singapore could be confirmed as a F1 venue for the 2008 season as early as next week according to a daily newspaper in the island republic.

Quoting a source close to negotiations, the Today tabloid claimed that Lion City would host the race either in April or August next year.

"I can confirm that Singapore is on the calendar next year and it could either be the third race of the season, or towards the end of the season in August," said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

An update on the event could be made next week when the Committee of Supply debate on the budget for the Ministry of Trade and Industry, which oversees Singapore's new tourism initiatives, is held in parliament.

Reports in January suggested that the island republic were in advanced negotiations to host a night race on a street circuit in downtown Singapore.

Malaysia, Bahrain, China and Japan are scheduled to host races on the 2007 F1 calendar, while Abu Dhabi will be added in 2009 and Korea in 2010.

Good news. At least I can watch live F1 now. To bad Michael is not racing anymore. It's a missed opportunity that I've never watched him race live.

Adam Air crashed, finally

So my prediction came true. Not that it's a good news though.
I hope this is the last we see of the low safety standard in Indonesian budget airlines. Although it may not be so. Why? Because Adam Air is owned by strong politician. The investigation report may be twisted, and such they don't have to do anything about safety. Other airlines won't bother. Not their problem.

And for Adam Air, how do you feel after killing people 102? Maybe it's just statistic for you. Yeah, what kind of people these guys are...

And FYI, the 737 plane is 17 years old.

Drink up for a longer life

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16173568/wid/11915773?GT1=8816

Moderate drinking may lengthen your life, while too much may shorten it, researchers from Italy report. Their conclusion is based on pooled data from 34 large studies involving more than 1 million people and 94,000 deaths.

According to the data, drinking a moderate amount of alcohol — up to four drinks per day in men and two drinks per day in women — reduces the risk of death from any cause by roughly 18 percent, the team reports in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

Too bad beer is quite expensive here, sigh..
Tomorrow. Last day of the week. Woo hoo..

Train roof caves in, 46 hospitalized

The Jakarta Post - Train roof caves in, 46 hospitalized

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta

Passengers related hearing frightening noises of creaking ironwork before the roof of an overcrowded train car caved in Friday morning in Jakarta, leaving hundreds injured in the ensuing panic.

Witnesses said most people were hurt as they tried to escape, or were thrown from the roof when the train came to a sudden halt on the route from Rangkas Bitung in Banten to Kota, West Jakarta.

At least 46 people were hospitalized.

Witnesses and an official of state railway company PT KAI also said the car -- with maximum capacity for 106 standing passengers -- was grossly overcrowded, with many people forced to find space on the roof.

"There must have been about 400 people in total in the inside and sitting on the roof," said Hasbullah Sudarno, who was treated for abdominal and leg injuries.

There were only four cars on Friday instead of the usual six, he said.

"When we reached Pondok Ranji station, I sensed that there was something wrong with the structure of the wagon. Shortly after that, when we got to the Tanah Kusir area, the iron framework of the roof started creaking, making a frightening noise," the 49 year old added.

The roof caved in along a stretch of track near Tanah Kusir, and the train came to a halt when someone pulled the emergency brake.

"I could see smoke coming from the iron wheels, while the situation inside the car was horrible. People were tossed around," he said.

"What made matters worse was that the chassis of the car disintegrated, causing the floor to buckle near the center, with the rear of the car flipping up and tossing people back into the center."

PT KAI spokesman Ahmad Sujadi said the probable cause of the accident was overcrowding, particularly due to passengers sitting on the roof.

"The train carried three times its standard capacity and the passengers also took up the whole roof, making the roof construction bend and collapse," he said.

Ahmad said the company posted notices on billboards and noticeboards at all stations forbidding people from riding on the roof.

"We have even put barbed wire on the roofs of some cars. But that doesn't stop them," he said.

PT KAI will cover hospital treatment for all passengers holding tickets.

"Those, who were riding on the train roof didn't pay for a ticket. Since they wouldn't listen to our warnings, I think they should bear the risk themselves," Ahmad said. (04/07)

oow yeahh.. this is pathetic. pathetic people at a pathetic country.
and even a more pathetic company called PT KAI, with her pathetic spokesman.

"Those, who were riding on the train roof didn't pay for a ticket. Since they wouldn't listen to our warnings, I think they should bear the risk themselves," he said. oh yeah, mister... how about the paying people inside the car who get some human bodies dropping on their head? and i thought it is your company's job to stop them from sitting on top of the train? that's why it's sooo.. pathetic.

Mystery of the exploding toads

Mystery of the exploding toads

Visitors to Hamburg parks are being warned to watch out for exploding toads.

Several thousand toads in the city's parks have so far mysteriously spontaneously exploded, sending entrails and toad body parts over a wide area.

Vets and animal welfare workers said the mystery has decimated the city's toad population as well as the unpleasant problem of leaving toad parts scattered around parks and open spaces.

Eyewitnesses say the toads swell up to three and a half times their normal size before suddenly exploding - sending entrails flying metres into the air.

Nature protection worker Werner Smolnik from Hamburg said over the last four days at least a thousand toads had died in this manner in scenes reminiscent of a science fiction film.

He said: "It is a complete mystery, we have a lot of ideas which we are following up, but at the moment we haven't the faintest idea if any of them are correct.

"It could be an unknown virus, or a fungus that has infected the water or a defence mechanism against aggressive crows which have appeared in the area recently.

"You see the toads crawling along the ground, swelling and getting bigger as they go until they are like little tennis balls, and then they suddenly explode."

Vet Otto Horst added: "I have never seen a thing like it."

"It's a real puzzle," agreed Janne Kloepper from the Hamburg Institute for Hygiene and the Environment, adding: "If this keeps up, there will be no toads left in Hamburg."

Oil price hike

the oil price hike in indonesia is official starting today. the rise average is about 29%.
demonstration is going on everywhere. anarchy might happen. just hope the president can handle this or else he's losing his chair. that will be real bad for the country's stability.

childhish country or may i say ignorant? why protest the hike, it's for their own good. the money is used to help the poor. they should think for their own future. cheap living cost & staying poor forever or increase in living cost & gradual improvement in their economy.

but again, the extra money earned by the price hike might be corrupted by the rats. they should protest the government to send the rats to jail instead.

under the garbage

The Jakarta Post - Indonesia landslide toll hits 96, dozens missing

Indonesia landslide toll hits 96, dozens missing

JAKARTA (Reuters): The death toll from a landslide that swept through two Indonesian villages near a garbage dump last week rose to 96 on Sunday as recovery crews pulled more bodies out of mounds of dirt and waste.

Almost no hope is held for 47 people still believed missing after a wall of black mud and garbage up to seven meters high swept through homes in the West Java villages before dawn on Feb. 21.

'There are a total of 96 bodies found as of 1 p.m. today. Today we found six, and 47 people are still missing,' Irbar, a military officer in Cireundeu village, told Reuters.

Police said heavy rains appeared to have brought down piles of waste that in turn triggered the landslide, leaving a swathe of broken rooftops and shattered walls.

Residents had long complained about the dump near their homes and held many protests since it was set up in 1980 to serve neighboring Bandung municipality, a city of two million people 140 km southeast of the Indonesian capital, Jakarta.

Landslides are common in other areas of Indonesia, with many blamed on widespread deforestation. (***)

that's tragic. buried by garbage. one official has become a suspect for this case. yet another irresponsible conduct. disaster will indeed strike when the nature is abandoned. now, let's wait for the disaster caused by irresponsible deforestation aka illegal logging.

Valentine & the theory of implicit egotism

Valentine's Day is about self-love, actually (The New Zealand Herald)

14.02.05 5.00pm
By Raj Persaud

Even on days other than Valentine's Day, our culture is pretty preoccupied with "romance" - huge industries have grown up encouraging it, including cosmetics, fashion, literature, art, films, TV etc.

At the heart of all this commercially encouraged amorous sentiment is the dreamy idea that romance is somehow mysterious - indeed the allure of love is enhanced by its inscrutability. Yet psychologists beg to differ.

The latest theory about love from psychological research is that basically the strongly positive associations people have about themselves "spill over" to enhance their attraction to nearly anything associated with the self.

This new psychological theory is called "implicit egotism" and promises to revise radically the way we think about love.

The new theory explains why, a few years ago, psychologists discovered that the faces to which we were most attracted were those that resembled our own. So passionate love for another is actually all about us - it's basically a narcissistic enterprise.

The romantics, of course, refuse to accept this cynical scientific view, but the key point about the research is that our preferences operate below conscious awareness and therefore appear mysterious at first glance, although their underlying "egotism" is revealed by experiments.

For example, a new study finds, rather unromantically, that exactly the same process which leads to us being drawn to our lovers seems to explain how we choose our dogs.

Christina Payne and Klaus Jaffe of Simon Bolivar University in Venezuela separated photos of dogs and their owners and found that volunteers could match the pictures more often than chance, using similarity in appearance.

We choose dogs that resemble us because we are driven by a basic desire to feel good about ourselves, and this means we evaluate similarity to the self as strongly positive.

Alarmingly in its power and irrationality, this occurs even when the similarity is obscure.

Psychologists have demonstrated that, although not consciously aware of it, we express strong preferences for numbers linked to our birth date, and words that have more letters from our own names in them.

Maurice Carvallo and colleagues at the State University of New York in Buffalo even found that the likelihood people would marry someone with the same first letter in their surname was 15 per cent to 25 per cent greater than chance.

The theory of implicit egotism - that we are so obsessed with ourselves that it drives our choices at a level below conscious awareness - began with an ingenious experiment conducted back in 1989 by psychologists John Finch and Robert Cialdini of the Arizona State University, who had participants read a biographical sketch of Rasputin, the notorious "Mad Monk of Russia".

In this sketch, Rasputin was described in decidedly negative terms. Half of the participants were led to believe that Rasputin shared their own birthday, whereas the other half was given no information about Rasputin's birth date. In the matching-birthday condition, participants made much more favourable judgments of Rasputin's character.

Then, in 2002, a team of psychologists lead by Brett Pelham of the State University of New York made a series of astonishing discoveries - they found, among other things, that people named Denise or Dennis are more likely than usual to make their living as dentists, and that people whose first or last name is Louis are disproportionately likely to move to live in Saint Louis, Missouri. The same applied to Jack and Jacksonville and George and Georgia.

Similarly, they found that birthday number preferences also appear to influence residential choices. People born on 2 February (02/02) are over-represented among the inhabitants of Two Rivers, Wisconsin, whereas people born on 3 March (03/03) are over-represented among the inhabitants of Three Forks, Montana.

These findings held for every possible day-month combination for which US cities existed as potential matches (eg, people born on 6 June were over-represented in Six Mile, North Carolina).

So major life decisions such as who we marry, what career we pick, and where we move to are influenced by a tendency to prefer ourselves, and therefore any similarity to ourselves that we find in the world around us.

The findings raise the question of whether all this Valentine's Day pandering to passion is really all about encouraging yet more self-focus.

After all, is not the key question this morning how many Valentine's cards did we get, and how many in comparison did you get?

The psychiatrist's advice is to take a break from the pressure to be perfectly romantic, and instead focus on some neglected but possibly more important values - like friendship and concern for others beyond immediate self-interest.

Take a break from the self-obsession that marketing encourages and spend today genuinely concerned for others, and by the end of it you might be a kinder human being, which is a lot more valuable than being a more attractive one.

Budget Airlines Keep Getting Accident

Masalah Teknis Sebabkan Lion Air Tergelincir di Mataram - 12/02/2005, 10:24 WIB - KOMPAS Cyber Media - NASIONAL

Mataram, Sabtu

(Ant/Nik)

So what is the cause? TECHNICAL PROBLEM.
What TECHNICAL PROBLEM? Not engine damage, not pilot's mistake, not human error, not airplane problem.
WTF??? SO, WHAT THE HELL IS THE CAUSE, DUDE? WHAT KIND OF TECHNICAL PROBLEM??????? STUPID PUBLIC RELATION!!!

Why not say your airplane is too old and the safety is compromised? Or the airport people gave the wrong signal? Or your pilot is blind? PR these days are getting more stupid than ever.

The budget airlines keep getting accident. Last year, Lion Air at Solo (30 Nov). Last week, Lion Air at Makassar (3 Feb). Yesterday was Lion Air at Mataram and Mandala Airlines at Semarang.

It's risky indeed. Airplane is the safest vehicle in the world. But look at what these Indonesian budget airlines and government officials do.

Jakarta smoking ban

Businesses brace for smoking ban

Abdul Khalik, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta

Hotels, malls and restaurants in Jakarta said on Sunday they were ready to comply with a bylaw banning smoking in all enclosed public places.

The City Council endorsed last Friday a bylaw on air pollution that bans smoking in public places and requires managements of public places to designate specific areas for smokers.

Hotels and restaurants interviewed by The Jakarta Post said on Sunday they had long separated smoking and non-smoking areas, while mall operators said they already prohibited smoking inside malls.

Putu Ayu Aristya Dewi, marketing manager for the Accor Group, which owns several four and five-star hotels in the capital, said the bylaw would bolster the group's policy of designating smoking and non-smoking areas in all of its hotels.

"We already distinguish between smoking areas and non-smoking areas. For example, we have a certain number of non-smoking floors or rooms. So we can follow the new regulation with a slight adjustment," she told the Post.

She said enforcing the regulation would not be difficult because most of the guests at the group's hotels were educated people and would understand the bylaw.

Yudith Nurwulan, public relations director for an international hotel chain, said her office would study the bylaw before deciding what policy changes it would make.

Fransiska Kansil, the public relations manager for a five-star hotel in the capital, said special smoking areas were already provided for guests at the hotel.

The newly endorsed bylaw criminalizes smoking inside public places, including schools, office buildings, buses, trains, airplanes, malls, restaurants and hotels. Violations can be punished with up to six months in jail and/or a fine of Rp 50 million (US$5,555).

The bylaw will not be enforced for a year to allow the authorities to educate the public about the ruling.

Riezka Novia Bewinda, media relations officer for Plaza Semanggi in Central Jakarta, said on Sunday the shopping center had been designated a smoke-free area.

"The management will discuss what impact, if any, the bylaw will have on Plaza Semanggi," she told the Post.

Handaka Santosa of Sogo said significant changes would have to be made at cafes and restaurants inside malls, because most of these establishments allowed guests to smoke.

"We must make some adjustments for restaurants and cafes. We are now studying what steps we will make in compliance with the bylaw," he said.

Danny Leo Lukito, owner of the Suite Seven cafe located in Kemang, South Jakarta, said he was unsure what the impact of the bylaw would be on his business.

"To be honest we still haven't prepared. If it is a private party, I don't think we can ban smoking. Right now we try to have separate places for smokers and non-smokers, but sometimes they get mixed together," he said.

He said he was not aware of any non-smokers complaining about the current setup at the cafe.

Is the new law going to work? It all depends on the law enforcers, really. But with current law enforcers behaving like this, I doubt this law will work out. What will happen is the new law is going to be a new source of money for them. "Oops, someone is smoking. Hey! You either pay the 50 million fine or you make peace with me and pay me 1 million." Doh!!
But at least some smokers will be more careful. But no police, the smoking will go on! And the heart attack + lung cancer will go on.... and the hospital and tobacco company will make money, yeahh...

Depp's the Best, Spears the Worst

Depp's the Best, Spears the Worst Autographer
Tue, Feb 01, 2005, 02:02 PM PT
LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Next time you want a celebrity autograph, step up to 'Pirates of the Caribbean' star Johnny Depp, but steer clear of Britney Spears.

Depp, 41, tops the list of the best celebrity signers of 2004, according to Autograph Collector magazine.

'Johnny Depp has decided to be the undisputed most-accommodating autograph signer in Hollywood today,' says Steve Cyrkin, the magazine's publisher and Editor-in-Chief. 'One collector told us, 'He'll sign for everyone, and it doesn't matter how many things you ask him to sign.''

Depp's fellow stars happy to take up a sharpie for their fans include 'Bourne Supremacy' star Matt Damon in second place, followed by Tom Cruise, Mike Myers, Angelina Jolie, 'Lord of the Rings' hobbit Elijah Wood, 'Mean Girls' star Lindsay Lohan, Jessica Simpson, Hilary Duff and 'Monster' Oscar winner Charlize Theron.

On the flip side of fame are the luminaries who'd rather not acknowledge their fans with a signature. Leading the list of the 10 worst celebrity signers is pop star Britney Spears because 'no one is better at showing their fans how little they mean to them.'

'While we're the first to defend any celebrity's right not to sign, how do you defend rude, crude and downright unattractive behavior?' says Cyrkin. 'As one collector told us, 'Britney has done all she can to earn her nickname, 'Bitchney Sneers.''

Keeping Mrs. Federline company is 'Charlie's Angels' star Cameron Diaz, webslinger Tobey Maguire, Diaz's beau Justin Timberlake, the Olsen twins, 'Aviator' star Leonardo DiCaprio, rapper Eminem, the now split Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston, Halle Berry and hotel heiress Paris Hilton.

The March issue of Autograph Collector is currently on newsstands."

that's another reason i like johnny depp. very talented, yet humble man.

Dahsyatnya Ketiak Lelaki dan Bau Wanita

Dahsyatnya Ketiak Lelaki dan Bau Wanita - 19/01/2005, 12:11 WIB - KOMPAS Cyber Media - Kesehatan

Jakarta, Rabu

Kini terbukti pula kalau hormon reproduksi wanita golongan LH (Lutetnizing Hormone) ikut terpicu pula.

Normalnya hormon LH mencetuskan terjadinya ovulasi atau keluarnya sel telur matang dari indung telur. Begitu wanita menghidu (mencium) bau khas ketiak lelaki, hormon LH-nya langsung membanjir dalam darah. Diduga bau keringat lelaki mengandung bahan yang mencetuskan keluarnya telur.

Komunikasi Kimiawi

Soal bebauan tubuh, Robert Burton sangat lengkap menghimpun dalam bukunya, “The Language of Smell”.

Jika diurai, senyawa copulin berisi tiga jenis asam, yakni asam asetat (acetic acid), asam propanoat (propanopic acid) dan asam butanoat (butanoic acid), selain hormon golongan androstenol. Beberapa kultur memanfaatkan asam vagina buat bikin lelaki semakin rajin greng.

ehm ehm, what to say...? business opportunity!!

'Come Bite Me!' Right...

Yahoo! News - 'Come Bite Me!' Right...

Wed Nov 3, 8:16 AM ET

TAIPEI (Reuters) - A man leaped into a lion's den at the Taipei Zoo on Wednesday to try to convert the king of beasts to Christianity, but was bitten in the leg for his efforts.

"Jesus will save you!" the 46-year-old man shouted at two African lions lounging under a tree a few meters away.

"Come bite me!" he said with both hands raised, television footage showed.

One of the lions, a large male with a shaggy mane, bit the man in his right leg before zoo workers drove it off with water hoses and tranquilizer guns.

Newspapers said that the lions had been fed earlier in the day, otherwise the man might have been more seriously hurt ... or worse.

an example of "blinded by religion"

just what's going on in his mind? :)

Cockroach is the sign of clean environment!

Kecoak Tanda Lingkungan Bersih!
"...Selain itu, kecoak ternyata mengandung protein tinggi. Layak santap dong?

Tepat sekali.

Anda tertarik?"

euww.... thanks but no, thank you

Volvo and Luxury

The new government looks quite promising.

I found this one rather funny :)

Pejabat Negara Hendaknya Hidup Sederhana
Kijang... haha.. Enjoy that! At least it is still the new Kijang, maybe.. The next one is funnier.

"Pejabat-pejabat eselon satu cukup kendaraan dinas sejenis Karimun saja."
Eat those Karimuns! Haha...

Yes, that's right. A Camry? Try Panther guys, hahaha...

The government should have done this when the reformation began. I will respect the officers more if they live a simple life. Why the hell does it take so long? We all know why, right? Time to throw away those rotten tomatoes. I bet those corrupt officers would not be too happy if this policy is implemented :) Time to grow up, man!

Poor Nemo.... put into toilet bowl, and flushed..........

I wonder why.....
But the next quote seems a bit encouraging:

Blah, don't know which party to choose........
