GParted almost make my data departed

I just want to change my external hd from lousy ntfs to fat32 so that i can write into the disk using ubuntu. So i resize the current partition and create a fat32 on the freed space. But what happened is, there was some error in the middle of the process. GParted shows that there were 2 partitions. One which fills the whole disk and one with 0 size. Both partitions' file system are not recognizable. Then I deleted the first partition. At this point, I can still read the files in the drive. Then I reconnect the drive and to my horror, everything was gone.

Help me.. GParted forum come to help. I come accross some similar ntfs cases, but no solution. But after some more searches, I found about this tool called TestDisk. At first, it can't detect the partition. The after some advanced poking, there is an option to choose the partition type. So I choose something resembling ntfs (there are 2 ntfs there, I just pick the first one). And voila, I can see the files. Then there was also an option to restore the backup table or something. I did that. I don't remember which one I did first. Anyway, I get it to work now.

Then I tried to resize the partition again, without setting the rest to fat32 this time. It doesn't work.

I also find about Hiren's Boot CD. It contains many recovery tools including TestDisk. I think it's very useful in this kind of situation.

hard drive crash

damn it, my laptop's hard drive crashed with all my data. crap.
now i have to be prepared to spend 300+++ to buy a new drive and recover the data.
i hope it can be recovered with reasonable price.

lesson learned: back up your data. hard drives are piece of shits.
and hitachi sucks. screw you hitachi! they've created lousy hard drive last time, and now mine is screwed too. less than 1 week after the 3 years warranty expired. great engineering there. it spoiled on time. hah!
